UNMA - Utrecht New Media Evening #3 Brain-Computer Interfaces

Descartes already asked himself if there were ways of being sure that his brains were located in his head and not somewhere in a plastic tray controlled by demons. Kevin Warwick, a professor who presents himself as the world’s first cyborg, claims he had a direct brain connection with his wife. And Uri Geller is said to use brainpower to bend spoons. So, what can we control with our own brains and what is made possible with brain-computer interfaces? How do scientists and artists currently use sensors capable of capturing brain signals and how are computers able to interpret these signals? The iPhone, for instance, is already able to follow your sleeping patterns and wake you in time, but are there also other dreams that computers are capable of tapping?

The third edition of the Utrecht New Media Evening (UNMA) will be held on 10 March. This edition will go into the present and future potential of brain-computer interfaces. Developers, researchers and artists will give away the latest developments of these interfaces. Artist Christoph de Boeck will present his work “Staalhemel” and researchers of the IMEC will go into the way brain-computer interfaces work so that everybody can have a go at home too.

Please note that this evening is also intended as a networking event, so make sure to bring your business cards!

The UNMA is an Impakt Event organized in collaboration with z25, NetNiet.org and Utrecht University (Master New Media & Digital Culture).

  • Date : Wednesday March 10

OPENING: THE SHOW

On the 28th of January the CBKU will open their new location at the Plompetorengracht 4 with OPENING : THE SHOW. A multimedia project with four openings conceived by the renowned artist Maurice Bogaert. Z25, together with Expodium, Kunsthal KadE, Kunstliefde, HKU and Das Bilt , is invited to host a part of this grand opening. Z25 will also provide technical realisation of the project and all exhibitions.

For OPENING: THE SHOW, like the other Utrecht art institutes, z25 has received a scale model of the new CBKU and is asked to curate a mini-exhibition in this room. The exhibitions will be on display at the different art institutes, the CBKU and they will broadcasted live on the internet.

For our mini-exhibition we've asked our friends of the Medialab Utrecht; Born Digital and NetNiet, if they know people who would be interested to experiment with us with projection-mapping in our scale model. On the 8th and 15th of January we want to create a vibrant projection show for the grand opening of the new CBKU. There are still some vacancies left for these experiment nights so if you are interested drop us a line at info@z25.org.

UNMA #2: What’s Cooking ? And Where ?

The Impakt, z25 and NetNiet.org foundations present the second edition of the “Utrecht Nieuwe Media Avond” (Utrecht New Media Evening), its expert-meeting and networking event. After a broad first look at the sector in which it was concluded that Utrecht's e-culture scene lacked a focuspoint, we now want to delve deeper. This episode we'll look at the follow-up question: What does Utrecht's e-culture scene need to better connect? Do we need a digital nursery, a monthly meetingpoint, or perhaps a lab bristling with soldering irons and computers? During the evening ten young initiatives will present their visions for Utrecht, after which those visions will be debated publicly.

The night is also intended as a networking fiesta, so bring your business cards!

Date: Wednesday 15th of July, 20:00h
Location: Impakt Headquarters, Lauwerecht 10, Utrecht

Global Game Jam - Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, 2009

Z25 together with Xform teamed up to form the ZX Spectrum team on the Global Game Jam 2009. During the Game Jam we could work one weekend on a game based on the “As log as we have each other, we will never run out of problems”.

The ZX Spectrum team created the game “Troika” and is based on the dutch song “Doderit” by Drs. P. In the game you play along with the story Drs P. is singing. We tried to create a game using a different aproach. The music and lyrics define the gameplay and the player plays a videogameclip.

The game is publish on the website of the Global GameJam

Utrechtse Nieuwe Media avond. Thursday 11th of December 2008

Impakt and z25 organize an expert-meeting and network night for the Utrecht new media scene. The creative sector is strong and growing in Utrecht. The Utrecht School of Arts focuses on Gaming and Interactive Design. The city of Utrecht recognizes the economic value of the Creative Industry en supports these developments. But what are the possibilities to produce artistically interesting projects in this sector ? How can the different players in the scene help and support each other ? And what can we learn from developments elsewhere ?

The new media sector in Utrecht is young and dynamic with many different initiatives. Apart from asking the questions above this night is also intended as a network moment where people and organizations in the Utrecht E-Culture can meet and greet each other.

z25 5 years old

Z25 is five years old!

Today (25th of August) five years ago Stichting z25.org was officially founded. During these 5 years z25 has grown to development institute that develops the possibilities of art and new media. Many experiments with just as many disciplines have been conducted the last couple of years. From dance to literature, from games to theater. Looking back is has been an exhilarating journey one we would like to continue until the end of time. We would like to thank everybody for their support and involvement. You all made z25 what she is today!

Thanks!

Jonas Hielscher, Jiri Heitlager, Laurens Simonis, Machiel Veltkamp, Jelle van der Ster, Arnaud Loonstra, Matthew Groen, Cindy van Rooijen, Joris Weijdom, Ronald Kox, Jan Samsom, Marc Opijnen, Sjors Houkes, Elmer Zwolsman, Pim Veltkamp, Dennis van Doremalen

Explosion at ISP also effects z25!

The explosion of a transformer unit of one of the biggest Internet Service Provider in America put their complete data centre with no power.

The force of the explosion removed three additional wall in the building. Approximately 10.000 servers and about a million websites became unreachable. Unfortunately the z25 website is one of these millions.

The old website became unreachable and we decided to put our new website, currently under development, online.

Boekman 75

The summer edition (75) of 'Boekman' is about the art and digital culture

Digital culture has created some kind of a revolution in the arts. Creation, consumption and conservation of art has changed dramatically. This edition of Boekman shows the ins and outs of the digital art world

The new Boekman uses a number of images of the z25 projects Dat-A and the Resons(e)ible Project. Z25 is also mentioned in the article 'De computergame: meer dan een spelletje' of Pablo Cabenda.

Z25 on the Impakt festival 2008

Z25 will present the projects Dat-A and DataMe on the Impakt festival 2008 in Utrecht. On Saturday the 10th of May in 'theater Kikker' several artists will present and discus their work. For more information check the festival guide on the Impakt website.

The Respons(e)ible Project: 14,15 and 16 February.

How do we relate to the virtual world? In what way can we identify ourselves with and feel responsible for our digital selves? What happens when we cannot control our digital selves? What has been taken away from you? The Resons(e)ible Project is a theatrical research to responsibility in the virtual world. A cooperation of the HKU and z25.org Foundation. We created a theatrical experience in which we copied the audience to the virtual world by using 3d visualization and scanning techniques.

Created by Joris Weijdom, Arnaud Loonstra and Bas Haas.

Ticket are available through Huis aan de Werf!

Peter Struyken excursion Saturday the 17th of November 2007

Z25 organizes an excursion to the solo exhibition of Peter Struyken in the Groninger Museum.

Peter Struycken (1939) became known in the 60s with his geometrical-abstract paintings where shape and form change systematically. In 1968 he became one of the first to use the computer in his work. De digital revolution that followed has been incorporated in his work the following decades. His artworks a praised for their great visual directness and lyrical power.

Successful z25.night Saturday 22-9-2007

After the first successful z25.night we immediately decided to organize the next z25.night on Saturday the 20th of October. The first night demonstrated the need to meet the people in the new media scene more often. If you want to drop by, present something or if you might have different ideas for the 20th please let us know !
